The deadline is quickly approaching for students who wish to be considered for the new STEM program. The response to this program, specifically designed for students who wish to pursue college degrees and careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) related fields, has been wonderful.

Completed applications are due to guidance counselors on Friday, February 19. In order to give teachers time to complete their portion of the applications, we ask that students have applications to teachers no later than Thursday, February 11.

The program will begin at Dorman Freshman Campus in the 2010-2011 school year and represents a unique partnership between our middle schools, high school campuses, RD Anderson Applied Technology Center, and a variety of community partners.

Students participating in this program will have the opportunity to work as a cohort, participate in an accelerated course of science/ mathematics study, and engage in both an internship and a research project. STEM will better prepare District Six students for STEM related professions.

Of the 30 fastest-growing occupations projected through 2016, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook concludes that 16 of them will require substantial Mathematics or Science preparation.

Parents of interested students may contact Thomas Webster or Dr. Cindy Doolittle at (864) 576-4212.
