Inclement Weather Procedures

It is the time of year when we occasionally have some ice or snow which may cause hazardous driving conditions. It is our intention to operate schools only when roads are safe for driving. We begin checking road conditions at 4:00 a.m.. However, many times we cannot be sure of conditions until two or three hours later. Often snow or ice will move into our area about daybreak or even later. We try to make a decision early, usually before 6:00 a.m. Once a decision is made, the media, both radio and television stations are notified, and they put it on the air with the 6:00 a.m. news. The announcement is repeated frequently until the normal time for school to begin. The school cannot guarantee the safety of road conditions at any time, even during the best weather. We make the decision whether or not to operate schools. Parents must make the decision whether or not to send their children to school. In the event of the necessity of announcing information about the closing of schools due to weather conditions, students and parents are urgently requested to cooperate with school personnel and the local radio and television stations in helping to get the accurate information widely distributed as early and as quickly as possible. The radio and television stations in Spartanburg are anxious to cooperate with the schools in making these announcements. It is felt that the radio and television are the most effective media through which the announcement can be made, and the cooperation of these stations is greatly appreciated. If a decision cannot be made by 6:00 a.m., the opening may be delayed for an hour or two. When this happens, the radio and television stations will be notified and announcements will be made. Because of our concern for the safety of our students and teachers/staff, the following procedure has been established in the event it becomes necessary to delay school.

WHEN A 6:00 A.M. ANNOUNCEMENT IS MADE THAT THE SCHOOL
OPENING TIME WILL BE DELAYED, NO TEACHER WILL BE AT
THE SCHOOLS UNTIL THE ANNOUNCED TIMES. THEREFORE,
YOU SHOULD NOT BRING YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL UNTIL THE
OPENING TIME AS ANNOUNCED.
